Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc., has unveiled plans to invest a minimum of $11 billion in Georgia, aiming to strengthen its infrastructure to advance cloud computing and artificial intelligence capabilities.
This significant investment in Butts and Douglas counties is anticipated to generate at least 550 high-skilled positions, reinforcing Georgia's status as a leader in digital innovation. AWS emphasized that these investments will bolster the future of AI from its state-based data centers, especially as the demand for advanced cloud infrastructure and computational power surges due to the rise of Generative AI.
AWS's data centers are designed with flexibility to adeptly handle graphics processing units (GPUs) for both traditional tasks and AI and machine learning applications.
This new investment is slated to create numerous direct positions at AWS in diverse technical areas such as data center engineering, network specialization, engineering operations management, and security. It will also bolster thousands of roles in local construction and the data center supply chain.
Amazon highlighted its substantial contribution to Georgia's economic landscape over the last decade. Since 2010, the company has invested $18.5 billion in the state and added $20.1 billion to Georgia's GDP. This has supported 34,000 full- and part-time jobs, along with 44,700 indirect positions.
Roger Wehner, AWS's Vice President of Economic Development, stated, "The continuous infrastructure investments by AWS across the U.S. highlight our unwavering dedication to empowering our customers' digital innovation via cloud and AI. State and local leaders have created an environment that allows companies like AWS to undertake bold, future-oriented investments."
In Georgia, AWS has committed to renewable energy with investments in eight solar farms. Additionally, through its Disaster Relief Hub in Atlanta, Amazon has partnered with local groups to utilize its logistics and technology in delivering essential supplies to areas affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton.
Douglas County Commission Chairwoman Romona Jackson Jones remarked that AWS's initial investment to expand its infrastructure and support AI technologies marks a transformative development for the county.
