Consumer sentiment in Belgium deteriorated for the second consecutive month in December, reaching its lowest point of the year, largely due to escalating concerns about unemployment, according to survey data released by the National Bank of Belgium on Thursday.
The consumer confidence index declined to -9 from -8 in November. Notably, the index representing fears of unemployment over the next 12 months soared to 32 from 25, indicating the highest level recorded this year.
Consumers' outlook on Belgium's economic situation over the next year remained unchanged, with the index holding steady at -24.
However, the sub-index tracking expectations for personal financial situations showed a slight decline, dropping to -2 from -1. Conversely, households demonstrated increased intentions to save, as reflected by a rise in the corresponding sub-index to 21 from 19, marking the highest level since the beginning of the year.
