At the close of the year, France's consumer price inflation held steady, according to a preliminary estimate released by INSEE, the national statistical agency, on Tuesday.
The inflation rate for consumer prices remained unchanged at 1.3 percent in December, maintaining the same level as in November. This was slightly below the anticipated increase to 1.5 percent.
In contrast, harmonized inflation experienced a modest uptick, rising to 1.8 percent in December from 1.7 percent in the prior month. Despite this increase, the inflation rate remained under the European Central Bank's target of 2 percent.
The agency noted that a minor recovery in energy prices was counterbalanced by a more pronounced decrease in the prices of manufactured goods compared to November, alongside a deceleration in food price growth.
Energy prices saw a 1.2 percent increase from the previous year, while prices for manufactured products declined by 0.4 percent, and food prices remained virtually unchanged.
When evaluated on a month-to-month basis, consumer prices increased by 0.2 percent, reversing the 0.1 percent decrease noted in November and aligning with market expectations. Similarly, the harmonized consumer price index rose by 0.2 percent, following a 0.1 percent decline in the preceding month.
