ATMs or automated banking machines are a foolproof high security modern technological Marvel-wood ha ha I’m just kidding.

Not only are ATMs often vulnerable to hacking bad not to mention other attacks, they can also be physically modified with minimal effort in a
manner that can be difficult for a customer to detect.

This happens so discreetly that many victims have no idea that somethings amiss until they look at their bank statement weeks later. And because many ATM card slots you similar designs especially the machines for major well-known banks there are plenty of scammers on the black market that are designed to look almost exactly like legitimate cards like making it even harder for a customer to realize what’s going on.

So the miscreant also install small a pinhole cameras in inconspicuous locations on the ATM to capture footage of you punching it in and some scammers even buy number pad overlays on the black market to capture pins which can be even less obvious.

And although it used to be quite common for scammers to get busted when they came back later to retrieve the skinny equipment more recent black market gadgets can transmit stolen card information and pins wirelessly, making it even easier for the bad guys to carry out their scheme without getting caught.

So how can you avoid falling victim to
a card scammer if you can’t even tell
that it’s there.

But in many cases you Cantel if you look closely or before using an ATM or a card reader at a gas station or wherever before you go sticking your
card into it give the card slot itself a good wiggle does it seem loose at all most.

ATMs and legitimate card readers are built very sternly due to how many people use them all day, so if you can move it around at all you should be
very wary of proceeding.

Also check the top of the ATM the screen and the area just above the pin pad to see if there are any tiny holes that could be cameras installed
by scammers remember these can be very small.

Finally check the pin pad as well does it wiggle the buttons feel a little bit off kilter when you push down on them.

If everything seems solidly built and you don’t and you don’t notice anything abnormal it’s probably safe to proceed, but in case you overlooked something and you do get your information stolen make sure you report it immediately to your bank as modern banks can often help put stolen money back into your
account if you tell them about the fraud in a timely fashion.

Banks are also getting a little more serious about trying to prevent card skimming.

Some new ATMs are not only outfitted with tamper detection but they can also read the EMV chips on you or cards here.

These cards are much more difficult to skin as the date on a EMV chip is only good for a single transaction before changing the next time you buy something for withdraw money.

I’ve also started installing card slots with large cumbersome designs that are difficult to overlay with a Skimmer, though he’s definitely aren’t full proof soaked still give them a good wiggle before using your card.

It’s better to look a bit stupid before using the ATM then to find out that your card detailing fund has been completely wiped out.
