Consumer sentiment in Japan unexpectedly declined at the year's end, according to data released by the Cabinet Office on Wednesday. The seasonally adjusted consumer confidence index dropped to 36.2 in December, down from 36.4 in November. Economists had predicted an increase to 36.6.
The survey, conducted on December 15, included responses from 8,400 households.
A closer look at the data reveals a 0.5-point decrease in the index measuring the willingness to purchase durable goods, which fell to 29.4. Additionally, the sub-index evaluating overall livelihood decreased slightly to 34.1 from 34.3.
In contrast, the index related to income growth held steady at 40.2, while the employment index saw a modest rise, increasing to 41.2 from 41.0.
