Kawasaki Motors Corp. U.S.A. has issued a recall for approximately 39,000 John Deere lawn mowers, produced by Illinois-based Deere & Co. and powered by Kawasaki engines, due to potential fire and burn hazards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has noted that this recall also affects around 2,600 units sold in Canada.

The mowers involved in the recall are the John Deere ZTrak Zero Turn models: Z720E, Z730M, Z740R, and Z760R, each equipped with Kawasaki engines. Characteristically, these mowers feature John Deere's signature green and yellow color scheme.

The engines are domestically manufactured by Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp. U.S.A., located in Maryville, Missouri, which is a subsidiary of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. of Japan.

These Deere & Co. mowers were available at authorized John Deere dealerships across the U.S. from October 2018 to September 2024, selling for between $8,000 and $11,500.

The recall stems from an issue identified by the safety commission: the voltage regulator in the mowers' engines may malfunction during operation or storage, potentially leading to engine overheating, thus posing fire and burn risks.

This action follows reports received by Kawasaki of five incidents of fires and 26 instances of engines melting or smoking. To date, no injuries related to these mowers have been reported.

Consumers who own the recalled mowers are advised to discontinue use immediately and reach out to an authorized John Deere dealer for a complimentary repair. Both Kawasaki and John Deere are in the process of notifying all known purchasers directly.

In similar past actions, Kawasaki Motors recalled around 68,500 engines in June, used in various lawn and garden equipment brands, including John Deere, citing similar hazards. Additionally, towards the end of September, Deere & Co. retracted about 147,900 Compact Utility Tractors due to potential crash risks, alongside 16,800 units sold in Canada.
