Malta's general government surplus experienced a decline during the third quarter compared to the prior trimester, while public debt also reduced as a proportion of the gross domestic product, according to data released by the statistical office on Tuesday.

In the third quarter, the general government surplus stood at EUR 29.0 million, down from EUR 41.0 million recorded in the preceding three months. Contrastively, the same period last year registered a deficit of EUR 75.0 million.

Total revenue saw a year-on-year increase of 20.5 percent, significantly outpacing the 13.8 percent growth observed in the previous quarter. Concurrently, total expenditure rose by 13.6 percent, compared to a 10.5 percent increase in the earlier quarter.

The general government debt amounted to EUR 10.035 billion, equivalent to 45.3 percent of GDP. This is a decrease from 46.4 percent in the second quarter and 47.1 percent in the third quarter of 2023.
