Meta Platforms (META) is set to reduce its workforce by about 5%, as reported by CNBC. This decision is aimed at concentrating on "lowest performers" to improve overall performance standards within the organization. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has warned employees of potential further job cuts throughout the year to maintain heightened performance management expectations. As of September 30, Meta employed over 72,000 people. Although these layoffs are forthcoming, the company plans to refill the affected positions later this year, reflecting its ongoing commitment to strategic talent management.

In alignment with broader industry trends, Meta, along with other major tech companies like Cisco and IBM, is adjusting its investment strategy with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI). The company has already allocated billions of dollars towards developing its AI infrastructure, and such expenditures are poised to increase as Meta deepens its engagement with this rapidly evolving technology.

This initiative is part of a series of organizational changes at Meta, including a reduction of around 11,000 jobs in 2022. In 2023, Zuckerberg dubbed the year the "Year of Efficiency," highlighted by the company's decision to cut an additional 10,000 positions. Shares of META are currently down by 1.95%, or $11.86, trading at $596.47 on the Nasdaq.
