This collection includes 12 devices for creating rhythmic music in Ableton Live 12. These are among the first Max for Live MIDI Tools, a new class of Live devices that generate and transform MIDI clips.
I've always enjoyed making complex rhythms, but the piano roll in Live felt clunky and tedious. MIDI Tools solve this by providing simple devices that automate otherwise tedious or impossible processes. Each device in this collection helps you create exciting, novel rhythms quickly and playfully.
"Quickly and playfully" is key. For me, making electronic music is about getting a pattern going, listening, tweaking with available controls, and repeating the process. Fast, fun, and easy-to-use tools are essential for this quick cycle of action and listening.
These tools offer practical value in three ways:
They spark creativity.
They enable the creation of complex rhythms, like nested rhythms, rallentandos, and polyrhythms, which are hard to achieve with the piano roll.
They allow for variation in rhythmic and melodic ideas, keeping your music fresh.
The real power of these devices emerges in serial workflows-starting with initial MIDI and processing it through multiple transformers. An example is shown in this video: I create rhythmic containers using the Blocks generator, subdivide them with Divs, and fine-tune the groove with Feel. There's plenty of room to mix and match devices to develop your favorite methods.
These devices integrate with Ableton 12's new Scales feature, ensuring they only produce notes in key when a scale is enabled. When disabled, you can work chromatically. The devices also match Live's themes, blending seamlessly with your Live set's look and feel.
