In 2021, Splice approached composer, performer, and sound artists Richard Reed Parry and Susie Ibarra with the idea of embarking on a novel, long-distance musical collaboration. This marked their initial foray into working together, despite being physically apart. Inspired by Parry's previous compositional work, they decided to explore a concept involving the integration of their heart rates and breathing patterns into the fabric of their music. This unique approach became the foundation for establishing rhythmic tempos and musical dynamics, complemented by Ibarra's extensive repertoire of rhythmic and melodic percussion techniques, as well as her ongoing exploration of Philippine gong music.
Despite the absence of face-to-face interaction due to Covid lockdown restrictions, the artists initiated their collaboration remotely. They exchanged ideas and recordings, gradually constructing compositions that incorporated a diverse array of instruments, including upright bass, traditional Philippine gongs, drums, piano, guitar, harp, and various distinctive percussion sounds. The resulting compositions are immersive soundscapes that appear to hover in time and space, unfolding with a delicate balance of intimacy and expansiveness. These musical creations establish a profound connection with the listener's primal, internal body rhythms.
Collectively, these tracks give rise to an album that rejects preconceived musical structures, opting instead for an intuitive body-centric logic. While the global pandemic added a poignant dimension to the artists' exploration of universal human sounds, the music they crafted exudes a soothing, organic blend of rhythm and melody. It mirrors the deeply reflective and inherently personal nature of the moment in which it was conceived.
