Poland's retail sales growth rate in December was less robust than anticipated, according to data released by Statistics Poland on Thursday. Adjusted for constant prices, retail sales increased by 1.9% year-over-year in December. This marks a slowdown from the 3.1% rise observed in October, falling short of economists' projections for a 3.8% increase. Despite this, December represented the third consecutive month of growth.
The motor vehicles, motorcycles, and parts sector experienced the most significant annual increase, with sales climbing by 25.1% in December, though this was a deceleration from the 28.1% growth recorded in November. Sales of newspapers, books, and other specialized retail items also saw growth, rising by 4.7%, whereas the textiles, clothing, and footwear segment experienced a notable decline of 12.2%.
On a month-over-month basis, retail sales made a strong recovery, surging by 9.9% from November, reversing the 1.2% decrease seen the previous month.
For the entire year of 2024, total retail sales showed an increase of 2.7%, in contrast to the 2.7% decline registered the year before, as reported by the agency.
