Additive Synthesis for Everyone
Rift is a Max for Live additive synthesizer, featuring customizable oscillators, frequency and amplitude modifiers, and extensive modulation sources.
What is Additive Synthesis?
Additive synthesis uses multiple sine wave oscillators in parallel to generate complex waveforms. By adjusting the frequency and amplitude of these oscillators, it produces unique timbral qualities distinct from those of subtractive or FM synthesis.
A Modifier for Every Weather
At the core of Rift are the frequency and amplitude modifiers, which allow for deep shaping of harmonic partials.
- Funnel Modifier: Pulls down the partials closer to the note pitch for a cloudy beating effect.
- Ripple Modifier: Imposes a sine wave onto the partial amplitude for a drizzly comb filtering effect.
- Thunderstorm Modifier: Detunes and attenuates above the 32nd partial.
Building on Together
Rift was designed with input from artists, sound designers, and developers. Its internal code is modular and open-ended, allowing for new waveforms or modifiers to be added in the future.
