Derived from the rich cultural and sonic traditions of the native people of West Kalimantan, this assortment showcases the sonic landscapes of the Kadedek (mouth-organ) and Dau gong ensemble, meticulously captured at Hars Musika Studio in Pontianak.
Nursalim Yadi Anugerah and Found Sound Nation joined forces to document the contemplative hums of Kadedek and the intricate ceremonial cadences of Dau. The Kadedek, skillfully played by Yadi, comprises six graduated pipes, each equipped with an individual free-reed generating distinct pitches. Dau, a fixture in the Kanayatn community's rituals in West Kalimantan, finds application in harvest ceremonies, weddings, and healing rituals. It incorporates eight gongs divided between two musicians: We’ (the first musician) handling the first four low-pitched gongs, and Na’ (the second musician) managing the four higher-pitched gongs. This recording features Balaan Tumaan Ensemble's musicians, Ananda Aristi Dewa and Bumadius, interpreting various tunes like Bawakng, Jubata, Totokng, and Ledakng. Nursalim Yadi Anugerah, a renowned composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Pontianak, is celebrated for his distinctive approach to instrumentation and composition.
Functioning as both a composer and a do-it-yourself ethnomusicologist, Nursalim has engaged in extensive collaborations with indigenous musicians, aiming to safeguard and reinterpret their music through original compositions. Additionally, he served as the music director for three years for the Balaan Tumaan Ensemble, a creative laboratory and performance group based in Pontianak, drawing inspiration from traditional Kalimantan music.
This collection, consisting of 306 samples, is the result of the collaborative efforts of Found Sound Nation, with Christopher Botta handling the editing and mixing.
