African Balafon with Snares
French musician Jean-Philippe Rykiel introduced us to a unique African balafon where each key has snares that create a distinctive buzzing sound. This instrument is typically found in northern Ghana, Burkina Faso, and southeastern Mali, featuring hardwood keys suspended over calabash gourds. Small holes covered with silk or paper on the gourds produce the buzzing resonance.
Rykiel, known for his work with Salif Keita and Youssou N'Dour, turned to virtuoso Mamadou Diabate from Burkina Faso (now based in Austria) to play the balafon for a recording session. The recordings, now in our collection, offer a curious and inspiring sound.
