During a 2022 expedition to Antarctica alongside numerous musicians, activists, and creators, Madame Gandhi, an acclaimed artist, speaker, and activist, marveled at the immense beauty of the southernmost continent. Recognizing Antarctica's vulnerability to climate change, she aimed to capture the fleeting, delicate sounds of its precious ecosystem.
Since 1950, the Antarctic Peninsula has warmed nearly 3°C (5.4°F), surpassing warming rates elsewhere in the Southern Hemisphere. Climate shifts have altered weather patterns, leading to intensified westerly winds driving warm air over the peninsula's towering mountain range. This phenomenon, particularly in summer, results in a temperature rise of around 5°C in the northeast. Warmer temperatures accelerate ice melt and have caused significant ice shelf disintegration, posing threats like rising sea levels.
Madame Gandhi expressed her intention to leverage her musical talent to raise awareness about climate change and inspire action, stating, "Can my musical gift spark empathy and action for climate change?"
All sounds in this collection originate from recordings in Antarctica, capturing underwater ice cap ambience, lively Gentoo Penguin calls, seal growls, and fierce arctic winds. These recordings were transformed into electronic instruments by sound designer Sound MANA and engineer Kevin McCann, yielding synth pads from melting ice, percussion from snow and rock, and even unique penguin synths.
Madame Gandhi's project aims to foster love for the planet through sound and music, hoping to motivate action. Users are encouraged to utilize these icy sounds to craft music that inspires environmental appreciation and activism.
A portion of sales will support The 2041 Foundation, dedicated to climate education and sustainable practices in Antarctica.
Sound MANA, standing for Music, Art, Nature, and Awareness, is a studio in Woodstock, New York, co-founded by Atropolis. Madame Gandhi was their inaugural student in 2020, learning to utilize Nature recordings in music production. Their collaboration birthed a sample pack, "Madame Gandhi x Sound MANA: 100% Organically Sourced Material From Nature Field Recordings," on Splice.
