Réunion, an island situated in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mauritius, is characterized by its volcanic nature. The island spans 39 by 28 miles and features a tropical climate, with two remarkable volcanic peaks at its center: Pitons des Neiges ("Snow Peak" - 10,070 ft) and Piton de la Fournaise ("Peak of The Furnace" - 8,632 ft). Recognized as one of the world's top ten biodiversity hotspots, this secluded locale boasts protected waters, diverse landscapes, and isolation, fostering millions of years of evolutionary processes detached from mainland influences.
The Rare Ecosystems compilation showcases distinctive sounds from this unique closed ecological system. Collaborating with local musician Aurus, producer Charles Van Kirk explored the island's various terrains. They trekked through the mountain town of Cilaos via the Chemin de la Chapelle trail, examined the sonic qualities of volcanic sand beaches along the coast from Saint Denis to Saint Pierre, and traversed the volcanic crater at Piton de la Fournaise, capturing samples from the rugged surface of dried lava. Interestingly, the volcano erupted on July 2, 2023, less than two weeks after their recording session.
Recorded with a DPA 5100 surround microphone into a Sound Devices recorder, all sounds in this collection include drum beats derived from field recordings using Sensory Percussion drum sensors. Additionally, deep earthy subs and effects were created from subterranean impacts recorded with a Geofon. Aurus contributes to the aquatic percussion section, showcasing Cameroonian Akutuk techniques taught to him by Loïs Zongo. These samples are genuinely exceptional, distinct, and indeed, rare.
