The late A. Peter Brown's series The Symphonic Repertoire explored the symphony in Europe from its origins into the 20th century.

In Volume V, Brown's former students and colleagues examine the symphony in the Western Hemisphere. They cover symphonists from the early 1800s to the present and the unique challenges they faced in the European symphonic tradition. This research adds to a valuable resource for students, teachers, performers, and sophisticated amateurs.

The fifth volume, The Symphony in the Americas, offers a comprehensive history of the symphony genre in the United States and Latin America.
