The Canadian stock market experienced modest gains on Thursday, driven by an increase in material stocks. Trading activities remained relatively subdued throughout the day as investors awaited the release of employment data from both Canada and the United States on Friday.

The trading session was marked by low volumes, largely due to the closure of U.S. markets in memory of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at age 100 in late December.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index, which fluctuated in a narrow range, concluded the day with a slight increase of 21.68 points, or 0.09%, closing at 25,073.36.

Material stocks saw a boost as metal prices rose. Notably, Lundin Gold (LUG.TO) surged nearly 6%, while Capstone Mining Corp (CS.TO) ended the session up by almost 5%. Equinox Gold Corp (EQX.TO), First Quantum Minerals (FM.TO), Aya Gold & Silver (AYA.TO), New Gold (NGD.TO), and Osisko Gold Royalties (OR.TO) gained between 3% and 4.2%.

Additionally, Kinross Gold Corp (K.TO), Lundin Mining Corp (LUN.TO), K92 Mining (KNT.TO), and Teck Resources (TECK.B.TO) recorded strong performances.

Among other notable movers, Bausch Health Companies (BHC.TO) saw a 3% increase. EQB Inc (EQB.TO), Finning International (FTT.TO), Rogers Communications (RCI.A.TO), Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM.TO), Badger Infrastructure (BDGI.TO), Ag Growth International (AFN.TO), Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM.TO), and K-Bro Linen (KBL.TO) experienced gains ranging from 1.3% to 2%.

On the downside, shares of Bombardier Inc (BBD.B.TO), Hut 8 Corp (HUT.TO), Quebecor Inc (QBR.A.TO), and Richelieu Hardware (RCH.TO) declined between 2% and 2.5%.

Osisko Development (ODV) posted a modest gain of nearly 1%. The company announced the appointment of David Rouleau as Vice President of Project Development and announced the immediate departure of Eric Tremblay, Chief Operating Officer.

Meanwhile, Endeavour Silver Corp. (EDR.TO) saw its shares climb over 2.5%. The company reported a decrease in gold and silver production for the fourth quarter. Despite this, there was an increase in annual gold output, with the full-year production totaling 39,047 ounces, up from 37,858 ounces in 2023.
