Job openings in the United States saw an unexpected rise in November, as reported by the Labor Department on Tuesday. According to the data, the number of job openings increased to 8.098 million in November, up from a revised figure of 7.839 million in October.
Economists had initially forecasted a decline, predicting that job openings would fall to 7.700 million from the previously reported 7.744 million in October. However, the actual numbers exceeded these expectations.
The rise in job openings was observed in sectors such as professional and business services, finance and insurance, and private educational services. Conversely, the information sector experienced a decrease in job openings.
In contrast, the Labor Department's findings indicate that the number of hires declined to 5.269 million in November, compared to 5.394 million in October. Similarly, total separations were down to 5.126 million from 5.306 million in the previous month.
Specifically within separations, the number of people voluntarily quitting their jobs dropped to 3.065 million in November from 3.283 million in October. On the other hand, layoffs and discharges slightly increased, reaching 1.765 million in November compared to 1.748 million in October.
