The latest figures from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) reveal a modest improvement in the UK's Industrial Trends Orders for January 2025. The indicator, which measures the difference between the number of businesses reporting an increase compared to those reporting a decrease in orders volume, edged up to -34 from a previous low of -40 in December 2024. This uptick was officially updated on 23 January 2025.
Despite still being in negative territory, the six-point rise suggests an easing in the challenging conditions faced by British manufacturers. The lessened decline in order books might indicate growing resilience among UK manufacturers grappling with domestic and international pressures.
The improvement in the Industrial Trends Orders, although incremental, offers a glimmer of hope for the sector amid ongoing economic uncertainty. However, economists are likely to look for sustained improvements in the coming months to determine if this signals a broader trend towards recovery.
