Federal law prohibits the fabrication, imitation, forgery, mutilation, or alteration of any passport or instrument purporting to be a passport, with the intent to use it. It is also unlawful to intentionally and knowingly use, attempt to use, or provide to another for their use any false, imitated, counterfeit, mutilated, or altered passport or instrument purporting to be a passport. Penalties include heavy fines and prison terms of up to 25 years if the offense was committed to facilitate an act of international terrorism.

What is passport fraud?
Some of the ways this crime can be committed include:

• Apply for a passport with the identity of a deceased person;

• Using fraudulent supporting documents when applying for a passport;

• Using a stolen or altered passport; Y

• Bypass the two-parent signature rule for children to get a passport.
