Imagine your VPN/Socks connection is like sending a letter. You write the letter containing your original IP, put it in an envelope and write a fake from address (Your Fake IP) on the outside.
A DNS leak is like accidentally showing your original IP on the outside of the envelope. Something made that envelope see through. Instead of keeping it private, your computer may unintentionally reveal the websites you're visiting, even if you're trying to keep that information hidden.
